War and hatte; recognising other past forms
sein, Präteritum:
ich war;
du warst;
er/sie/es war;
wir waren;
ihr wart;
sie/Sie waren.
haben, Präteritum:
ich hatte;
du hattest;
er/sie/es hatte;
wir hatten;
ihr hattet;
sie/Sie hatten.
These are common in everyday past descriptions, even when another event uses Perfekt: Ich war krank und habe zu Hause gearbeitet. Begin to recognise konnte, musste, wollte, durfte, sollte, but fuller productive modal-past work belongs to A2. A modal with another infinitive has special perfect constructions; do not automatically assemble Ich habe kommen gemusst from separate vocabulary entries.
