Descriptions and longer sentences
Compounds, word families and unknown words
The last noun in a compound usually determines its gender and core category: die Tür + der Schlüssel → der Türschlüssel. A Haustürschlüssel is a kind of key, not a kind of house.
Connecting sounds such as -s- or -(e)n- are not freely predictable; learn actual compounds rather than inventing forms mechanically.
Prefixes/suffixes help recognition: un- often negates an adjective (freundlich/unfreundlich); -ung forms many feminine nouns (wohnen/Wohnung), but not every imaginable combination exists. -in/-innen often marks a female occupational noun: Arzt/Ärztin, Lehrer/Lehrerin. Compound meaning and word family knowledge reduce the need to treat every surface form as an unrelated flashcard.
- Example
- Ich habe meinen Wohnungsschlüssel verloren.
- English
- I have lost my apartment key.
- Hinglish
- Mere flat ki chaabi kho gayi hai.
der Fahrkartenautomat = ticket machine.
Hinglish: ticket nikaalne ki machine. The final noun, der Automat, supplies the compound's gender.
