Conversational repair and polite disagreement
Repair is a skill, not a failure. Learn to signal the specific problem:
Wie bitte? pardon?;
Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? repeat that;
Was bedeutet …? what does … mean?;
Meinen Sie …? do you mean …?;
Habe ich das richtig verstanden? have I understood correctly?
Ask about the missing date or location rather than restarting a whole conversation.
Use Entschuldigung to attract attention/apologise and Es tut mir leid for an apology or expression of regret, according to context. Bitte can mean please, you are welcome, or “here you are”. Avoid treating each English gloss as a universally interchangeable translation. Respond to an alternative: Freitag geht leider nicht. Geht es auch am Samstag?
