People, verbs and sentences
Sein and haben: two small verbs used everywhere
sein:
ich bin;
du bist;
er/sie/es ist;
wir sind;
ihr seid;
sie/Sie sind.
haben:
ich habe;
du hast;
er/sie/es hat;
wir haben;
ihr habt;
sie/Sie haben.
Use sein for identity, a quality or location; haben for possession and expressions such as hunger or time. German says Ich bin 31 Jahre alt, not “I have 31 years”. It says Ich habe Hunger, not a literal word-for-word translation of every English/Hindi expression. There is no need for a separate equivalent of English do/does in a question.
- Example
- Ich bin müde, aber ich habe heute Zeit.
- English
- I am tired, but I have time today.
- Hinglish
- Main thaka hua hoon, lekin aaj mere paas waqt hai.
Worked example

Hinglish: Meri behen ghar par hai aur uska ek sawaal hai.
