Duration, frequency and time expressions

Wie lange? asks duration; Wie oft? frequency; Seit wann? since when. seit normally accompanies a present-tense state continuing now: Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren hier. Do not automatically copy English present perfect. vor zwei Jahren locates a finished event two years ago. in zwei Tagen means two days from now, in a time context.

Frequency: immer, meistens, oft, manchmal, selten, nie. jeden Tag uses an accusative time phrase. montags means on Mondays habitually; am Montag can mean a particular Monday. von neun bis fünf; ab morgen; bis Freitag specify ranges or limits.

This, next and last: these expressions answer “when?” without an added preposition. They are accusative time phrases; learn the endings with the noun:

  • die Woche: diese Woche — this week; nächste Woche — next week; letzte Woche — last week.

  • der Monat: diesen Monat — this month; nächsten Monat — next month; letzten Monat — last month.

  • das Jahr: dieses Jahr — this year; nächstes Jahr — next year; letztes Jahr — last year.

Nächsten Monat habe ich Urlaub. Letzte Woche war ich krank. = I have time off next month. Last week I was ill. Hinglish: Agle mahine meri chhutti hai. Pichhle hafte main beemaar tha.

Example
Ich lerne jeden Tag. Seit September wohne ich hier.
English
I study every day. I have lived here since September.
Hinglish
Main har din padhta hoon. Main September se yahaan reh raha hoon.
Worked example

Ich lerne seit drei Wochen Deutsch. = I have been learning German for three weeks.

Hinglish: Main teen hafton se German seekh raha hoon.

The German verb stays in the present for the ongoing activity.
