Talking about the past
Choosing haben or sein in the Perfekt
haben is used with many activities and verbs taking an accusative object: ich habe gearbeitet, geschlafen, das Buch gelesen.
sein is common with intransitive changes of location/state, and with sein, bleiben, werden: ich bin gegangen, gekommen, aufgestanden, geblieben, gewesen. Learn the auxiliary as part of a verb's typical construction.
“Movement always means sein” is too broad. Ich habe getanzt can describe an activity; a directed-motion construction may differ. Some verbs vary by meaning/region. Compare Ich bin nach Hause gefahren and Ich habe das Auto gefahren. For routine beginner output, use the specific constructions recorded in this pack; avoid inventing an auxiliary rule from English.
- Example
- Wir sind nach Berlin gefahren und haben dort Freunde besucht.
- English
- We went to Berlin and visited friends there.
- Hinglish
- Hum Berlin gaye aur wahaan doston se mile.
Sie ist um sieben Uhr aufgestanden und hat Kaffee getrunken.
Hinglish: Woh saat baje uthi aur usne coffee pi.
The coordinated events use different auxiliaries.
