Grammar

Nouns, cases and negation

Negation: nicht, kein and the answer doch

Use kein to negate a noun phrase with an indefinite article or no article: ein Auto → kein Auto; Zeit → keine Zeit; Kinder → keine Kinder. It takes endings: Ich habe keinen Termin; Ich fahre mit keinem Bus.

Use nicht for verbs, adjectives, definite/possessive noun phrases or focused contrasts.

Ich bin nicht müde. Das ist nicht mein Buch. Ich komme heute nicht.

Negation position depends on what you negate: Ich fahre nicht heute, sondern morgen contrasts days. Avoid the rule “nicht is always the last word”: Ich kann heute nicht kommen is correct.

Example
Hast du keine Zeit? Doch, ich habe Zeit.
English
Don't you have time? Actually, yes, I do have time.
Hinglish
Kya tumhaare paas waqt nahin hai? Hai, mere paas waqt hai.
Worked example

Ich habe keinen Hund. Das Essen ist nicht warm.

Hinglish: Mere paas kutta nahin hai. Khaana garam nahin hai.
